Ordinary things

Look for things that express what you feel inside...and draw them.

Ordinary things

When you draw clothing or drapery, you will find that it is quite easy to shift out of conceptual, left-brain thinking. This is because clothing and drapery are rich with clear directions that cannot be named or labeled. You can see directions and follow them with your eye and hand, yet you don't get stuck in defining anything. It's only cloth, after all.

One day I walked through the studio and saw this very ordinary yet beautiful arrangement of lines and directions. It was an old sheet swung around the back of a large canvas. The arrangement of lines expressed a balled-up energy. I too felt a balled-up energy inside me. The feeling dissipated as I drew it out of me. Try it sometime yourself.
