What It’s Like at a Spiritual Summer Camp for Adults
Relive the glory days of your youth – now as an adult – in Oklahoma City, OK.
Growing up in the 1950s, a two-week summer sleep-away camp promised endless adventures and limited parental supervision, it was a child’s version of heaven. When I was a young teen, I went to a Southern California mountains camp. It was the first place I ever rode a horse in the woods, shot a bow and arrow, and went lake swimming/canoeing – it was also where I had my first experience as a teen with other teens my age and older who supported each other in group activities.
Over the years some of these memories have faded into the cycle of adult responsibilities, but I have always looked for opportunities to rekindle that supportive not-a-care-in-the-world feeling, even just for a little while. The Prosperos Assemblies have held this promise for me as well as - expect the unexpected - in learning something new, coupled with a type of camaraderie built on mutual trust and friendship among like-minded people who spend time together.
When I was. kid, it was never too early to start dreaming, imagining, thinking or planning for summer camp. As a kid it seemed like it took forever to get to the day I would be leaving for camp, but in real time, if arrangements had not been made in the appropriate time frame, summer camp could be out-of-reach because the opportunity to make reservations had come and gone or beds had reached capacity far before the final day for registration.
As it turns out, I’m not the only one who dreams of summer camp – today, more and more groups and hotels are offering programming that is geared toward adults, yet designed to re-create the feeling of childhood discovery and wonder. The Prosperos is one of them. While many types of groups around the world offer these camp-like vibes, The Prosperos presents the real deal: and has since 1957. While The Prosperos 2023 location of Oklahoma City may not conjure the most exotic of summer camp visions, the experience will be one that will linger in your consciousness as path-changing. After all, you come to experience the unexpected.
Day 1 - Friday, September 01, 2023: Sunsets and Reception
Check-in, and unpack. You are here for Self-care so acquaint yourself with your hotel, get your packet of information as to the Four days of events planned for you by the Prosperos, then check with the hotel for amenities and outings, in the hotel and around the city that you might want to take advantage of.
Once you have dropped your bags in your hotel room and pulled your gaze away from the pool, you’ve located “The Prosperos Greeters” and the location of the Sunset Opening Reception - Meet and Greet. New friends are met as well as memories from long-time friends are shared. Plans are made to meet the next day for meals or to sit together.
Day 2- Saturday, September 02, 2023: Fun, Relatable, and Clarity
I don’t remember any breakfasts at my childhood summer camp being served table side, but I indulge at the hotel dining room, or sitting on the hotel’s patio for table service, being served while watching the flow of hotel guests. I might even take a swim before class starts in their outdoor pool.
For me mornings are my special time to go over my journal and/or planning calendar to review what I wrote about the day/month/year – it allows me to focus on my experiences of accomplishments or what to do next or find those areas for Translation or RHS when those experiences bring the feeling of discouragement and frustration. Knowing that you have a group that is there to draw upon for clarity.
Assembly is your chance to embrace your team, your fellow students in self-care through Class and workshop sessions as well as eating, laughing, and play…and to dream of what’s next with you and the Prosperos.
Day 3 Sunday, September 03, 2023: Mind, Body, and Soul
No camp experience is complete without hiking in the woods. In the Prosperos we know the woods is the archetype for the unconscious, the unknown, the unseen, and the undigested. It can seem like the driest places on earth, yet within the forest is an oasis that beckons you to a clearing. This clearing may seem like a lush park with cascading waterfalls fed by a natural spring. Your guides out of the forest into the clearing will be through the workshops and lectures presented by the teaching staff of the Prosperos over this four-day Assembly.
Speaking of cascading waterfalls, the sound of music, laughter, and conversation can sound like cascading waterfalls. Here at the Prosperos’ Assembly Camp, it’s the final night of the traditional end-of-camp banquet and awards night. For some, the weekend workshops and lectures will be like being dropped into the chilly-yet-refreshing waters of creativity. A chance for you to dunk your head into the water of this creative space to lose yourself in the moment of beingness, forgetting about anything else at home, work, or anywhere in the world and to commune with the nature of all there is – and that last night you think - that’s what summer camp is all about.
Day 4 - Monday, September 04, 2023: Communing within the Universe
The Assembly Summer camp is about to end, filled with activities of aloha, and checking out. Many are busy experimenting with the new ideas they have come across. The blissful last few hours of presentations are packed with examining and reiterating that which is True, Sound, and Complete in a personal and deep message.
Assembly is a short stint, but it would tick every box on a summer-camp list if that list uncovered the adventurous, thrill-seeking child within – in ultra-luxe fashion. AND brought to the Adult the importance whether through team-building exercises, service projects, or small group discussions, the importance of how to love and serve self and others.
Join us for a summer camp experience, an opportunity to strengthen your understanding of Truth and build lasting relationships with our community, and growth and emerge at Assembly. The Prosperos Assembly, September 01- 04, 2023.
